Buffalo News needs to stop ignoring to meet over insensitive coverage of Italian Americans

The Federation of Italian-American Societies of WNY is outraged at the disrespect and insensitivity shown to the Italian community of WNY by the Buffalo News Sunday March 19th in its front page story and headline about the Buffalo Mafia on St. Joseph’s Day a sacred day to Italians. All ethnicities need to be treated equally in our newspaper with dignity and respect. We sign this petition to demand the News stop ignoring our attempts to meet with the editorial board over their insensitive coverage of Italian Americans.

PRESS RELEASE COLUMBUS WEEKEND 2016

REGARDING ATTACKS ON COLUMBUS DAY

As Italian-Americans, we, the members of the Federation of Italian-American Societies of WNY along with millions of Italian-Americans nationally celebrate Columbus’ well known attributes of bravery, courage, and an indelible spirit to search and find new lands yet discovered by other European explorers.  Any alleged defect in character is to be taken in a historical context, particularly in light of similar actions that transpired among others that lived during that time period.  To do otherwise is pure, historical revision and something we refuse to become a part of.

More importantly, today, Columbus Day is not only a day that just recognizes the successes of one individual explorer, but rather, a celebration by the Italian-American Community for the many contributions and successes of all those of Italian descent who have made America the wonderful “new world” we are part of today.

If the decedents of indigenous peoples wish to celebrate the accomplishments of their forefathers, we would be glad to join with them and any and all other ethnic groups who are intent on doing the same.  However, if the intent is to denigrate the accomplishments of Italian-Americans, then we hope they re-evaluate their intentions.  A historical perspective from today’s view is a rather subjective examination of what transpired during many different time periods with different social and cultural mores.  Any historical revision can be a very slippery slope.
